Summer holidays are some of the most fun weeks when you’re a kid. They’re the time of year when school is the last thing to think about, sunny days are ahead, and there’s so much you can get up to!

And sometimes, the ‘so much’ in question is staying inside all day playing video games, watching movies, reading, doing crafts, etc., meaning you don’t really get to see much of the sun at all.

That might be something you’re a bit concerned about right now, based on the habits you’ve noticed your kids picking up over the last couple of months. It might even be that you’ve not been outside very much lately, and you’re worried you’re setting a bad example.

And if that’s the case, we’re here to help you get them on their feet and back outside again!

Here are a few ideas on fun things you can do with the kids to help them get their exercise in and soak up some vitamin D.

Have a Water Fight

Water fights are so much fun! And they also come with the added bonus of not being allowed all too often… As a result, challenging the kids to a water fight on a sunny day might just be the best way to get them out in the garden.

You can fill balloons and throw them around, or you can get super soakers and/or nerf guns that can be filled with water. Or you can simply get a big paddling pool and let them splash each other as much as they like!

Try Out a Swimming Class

Some schools offer them, but most schools don’t. But if you live in a coastal town, the idea that your child isn’t able to swim might not sit quite right with you! And even if you live further inland, it’s still a fun life skill to pick up!

That’s why it’s worth considering a few swimming lessons for you and the kids this summer time. You can get out of the house, down to the local pool, and work one on one with an instructor that knows how to make the water even more fun!

Eat Outside

Sometimes it’s not about encouraging ‘fun’. Sometimes it’s just about getting the kids to do ‘indoor things’ outside instead.

And when you’ve got some garden space, with a table or picnic blanket to sit and eat on, you’ve got the perfect set up for ‘tricking’ the kids into a bit more outdoor time.

Because outdoor dinners, impromptu picnics, and small finger food buffets out on the patio and lawn are a great way to get the kids racing outside for something delicious!

If you’re worried that your kids are going to spend most of their summer indoors, you can encourage a bit more outdoor time with ideas like these. Let them throw water around, have a few more family activity days, and simply just take the dinner table outside with you!
